Ludo Superstar Creator, Blacklight, Secures Maiden Institutional Funding Led by Udyat Ventures

Blacklight Studio Works Pvt. Ltd, which operates Noida-based gaming startup Blacklight Games, has made headlines by securing an undisclosed amount in its maiden institutional funding round.

The funding round was led by Noida-based investment firm Udyat Ventures and saw participation from Kratos Studios (brainchild of former CEO of Nazara Technologies Manish Agrawal). Dexter Ventures and Polygon Ventures also participated in the funding round.

As per the startup, the freshly raised funds will be used to expand into new markets. The gaming startup also plans to use the capital for hiring and investing in artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance player experience through personalization.

Co-founded by Anupam Srivastava and Shruti Sarraf in 2011, Blacklight Games is the creator of the popular computer game Ludo Superstar. As per the startup, it has over 200 million downloads across three game titles, with its flagship game, Ludo SuperStar, being one of the most downloaded Ludo titles.

Speaking about the development, Shruti Sarraf, Co-founder of Blacklight Games, said, 

“From the very start, our aim has been to establish a global brand for classic games. The global stage holds potential as billions of smartphone users is each a potential gamer.”

Statement from the Investors

Commenting on the development, Rahul Gupta, managing partner at Udyat Ventures, said, 

“Anupam and Shruti have built Blacklight grounds up, and we are looking forward to building an international gaming studio brand from India.” 

Udyat Ventures is the family office of Harsh Gupta, who is currently the Managing Director of Udyat Group. In 2022, the firm participated in the $600,000 seed funding round of Pune-based IoT startup ThingsUp.

Devendra Agrawal from Dexter Capital highlighted Shruti and Anupam’s growth as an entrepreneur who, without any single rupee of external capital, built Blacklight to be among the top 10 gaming publishers in India with a cumulative download of 200 mn+.

Manish Agarwal, Co-founder of Kratos Studios, talked about Shruti and Anupam’s data-driven mindset and work ethics as they went about building Blacklight Games fully bootstrapped. And he believes that the funding round would enable the startup to scale to global markets, leveraging the solid foundation they have built thus far.
