ShareChat Co-Founders’ New Venture, General Autonomy, Secures $3M in Funding to Revolutionize Factory Automation
General Autonomy, a startup operating in the industrial robotics space, has raised $3 million (Rs 25 crore) in a seed funding round from venture capital firms India Quotient and Elevation Capital.
The funding round also saw participation from angel investors such as Srinath Ramakkrushnan (Zetwerk co-founder), Ramakant Sharma (Livspace co-founder), and Ankush Sachdeva (ShareChat founder).
General Autonomy | AI-driven Machines
Founded by social media unicorn ShareChat’s co-founders Farid Ahsan and Bhanu Singh, General Autonomy is an industrial robotics firm that builds AI-driven machines to automate labour workflows in factories.
As per Ahsan, factories are complex puzzles, and to get safer, more efficient, and standardized production automation is the key.
General Autonomy’s Co-founder, Ahsan, wrote,
“Factories are complex puzzles, and automation is the key to seeing the full picture, leading to safer, efficient, and standardized production… With a vision to make mass manufacturing agile and distributed like software development, we’re in Bengaluru but working globally.”
It’s noteworthy that in January, Ahsan and Singh stepped down from their active roles at ShareChat, a vernacular social media platform. The development had come at a time when the vernacular social media platform was scaling down parts of its business and laid off around 20% of its staff, amounting to around 500 people.
And with this funding round, Ahsan and Singh have joined the ranks of several growth-stage startups where the founding team or top-level leaders left the firm and managed to raise funds for their new venture. GoodGudi (founded by Dailyninja’s founders), Atomicwork (founded by Minjar’s founders), GenWise and Third Unicorn, founded by former BharatPe executives; and Virgio (founded by former Myntra CEO), are some startups that fall in this category.
Industrial Robotics Space
As per a report from Tracxn, 12 out of the 45 startups focused on this sector have been able to secure funding, which includes notable names such as Ati Motors, CynLr, Accio Robotics, and Vyorius.
In a similar development in the industrial robotics space, Ati Motors, an autonomous industrial robots maker, secured $10.85 million in a Series A funding round to expand its operations in the US, Southeast Asia, and Mexico. It also aims to target new markets, such as Europe and Japan via their global partnerships.
The funding round was led by True Ventures, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm.
