BYJU'S Acquires Whodat
Indian Startup News

Edtech giant BYJU’S has acquired Bengaluru-based computer vision and AR startup Whodat for an undisclosed sum, taking the total number of its acquisitions this year to seven.

Following the transaction, early investor Ideaspring Capital, which had put in $600,000 in the company at the seed stage, will fully exit from Whodat. Additionally, as part of the deal, edtech giant BYJU’S is set to take control of Whodat’s team and its proprietary computer vision platform to accelerate its new product development.

Founded by Sriram Ganesh and Kaushik Das in 2013, Whodat is an Augmented Reality products and services company with a deep focus on R&D. The startup has built an AR platform that empowers developers to create beautiful AR experiences.

Speaking on the development, Sriram Ganesh, Founder of Whodat, said,

“We are incredibly excited to partner with BYJU’S on a mission to make students across the world fall in love with learning. Whodat has had an incredible journey so far, and this will leapfrog our impact to the next level.”

Making this its seventh acquisition, BYJU’S, in 2021 alone, has spent over $2 billion in M&As already. In July 2021 alone, the edtech decacorn acquired three startups-EpicToppr and Great Learning.

Anita Kishore (Chief Strategy Officer at BYJU’S) commented on the deal and stated that this deal would help them accelerate their product roadmap to provide immersive educational products across product lines. She said,

“We are excited to have Sriram, Kaushik, and the entire Whodat team join BYJU’S. This will help us accelerate our product roadmap to provide immersive educational products across product lines.”

These acquisitions will further cement BYJU’S dominance in the Indian as well as global edtech sector. Additionally, with the acquisition of Whodat, the total number of startups acquired by the edtech decacorn reaches 16.
