Indian Funding News

UrbanKisaan, a Hyderabad-based agritech startup specialising in hydroponic cultivation, has raised an undisclosed amount of funding from BASF Venture Capital GmbH (BVC).

As per the startup, it is looking to expand its market presence in India and deploy its farming technology to work with thousands of farmers.

Started by Srinivas Chaganti, Vihari Kanukollu, and Sairam Reddy in 2017, UrbanKisaan is on a mission to ignite agri-entrepreneurs. The agritech startup operates several suburban greenhouses and vertical indoor farms in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. UrbanKisaan, via its franchisee-owned brick-and-mortar stores, mobile app, and website, sells fresh vegetables, fruits, greens, and herbs.

Speaking on the development, Vihari Kanukollu, Co-founder and CEO of UrbanKisaan, said,

“Our approach in hydroponics enables us to produce our food cost-effectively and with relatively little effort. Our produce also contributes towards sustainability as it is grown in clean, hygienic farms in and around the city, thus minimising the total carbon footprint. The use of IoT-enabled technology for monitoring the farms ensures pesticide-free produce. The growing demand from our customers shows that our idea is well-received.”

UrbanKisaan claims to have optimised hydroponics technology for use in tropical climates, including India. And as per the startup, important parameters in its farms like the nutrient content, CO2 concentration, light concentration, pH levels, atmospheric humidity, etc., are controlled and adapted to the needs of the crops using an app.

Through hyper-local urban farms, UrbanKisaan is creating a completely transparent supply chain with a low-carbon footprint.
