PIL filed against WhatsApp Payments in India
National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has given its approval to WhatsApp Payments (Expansion of PIlot) in India, but Centre for Accountability and Systemic Change (CASC) has sought an instant rollback of the WhatsApp Payments project.
Since 2018, WhatsApp Payments has been stuck in beta mode in India.
And recently, when WhatsApp received NPCI’s approval for its UPI payments service, The CASC doubted WhatsApp and Facebook’s data localization compliance, and also WhatsApp’s ability to handle digital payments in India.
As per CSAC,
“It is submitted that one million Indians cannot be reduced to guinea pigs. Their sensitive personal data, including financial data, cannot be stored outside India in contravention to the RBI Circular.”
“WhatsApp on many occasions has claimed compliance with RBI data localization norms, even though RBI’s affidavit proves that it is not the case,” the PIL application read (reportedly).“
