According to a report titled ‘Building up the e-gaming ecosystem of India and the influence of smartphones’ by IAMAI in collaboration with OnePlus and RedSeer, the Indian gaming market is poised to reach $6-7 billion in value by 2025 from $1.8 billion presently.

The report was launched at a roundtable discussion around e-gaming hosted by IAMAI, moderated by Kanishka Mohan, Associate Partner, RedSeer. It highlighted that 40% of the hardcore gamers pay for their games with an average spend of Rs 230 per month.

Accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the gaming sector witnessed growth in mobile app downloads by 50% and user engagement by 20%, as per the report.

Speaking at the roundtable discussion,  Shri Jayesh Ranjan (Principal Secretary of the Industries & Commerce (I&C) and Information Technology (IT)) talked about the growth potential of the gaming sector and the significance of user-friendly devices for the same.

Shri Jayesh Ranjan said,

“The gaming sector has underlined the significance of affordable smartphones with capable hardware. I am happy that parallelly, work is going on to make phones more user-friendly for gaming by leveraging 5G technology, developments in AI/ML, and hardware manufacturing.”

As per the report, mobile gaming dominates the Indian gaming sector currently and contributes more than 90% to the $1.8 billion gaming market. The segment is expected to further grow to generate $6-7 billion value by 2025, it added.

With increasing traction, spending in gaming grew by over 100% in 2020 due to the adoption of digital services amid the pandemic. The gaming segment saw a phenomenal 100% increase in expenditure and a 154% increase in average ticket size between the two years (2019 and 2020 comparison).

Home to over 400 million online gamers, the Indian online gaming segment is expected to more than double at Rs 29,000 crore by FY25, as per a report by KPMG. Additionally, the number of gamers is estimated to grow to 650 million by 2025.
